With the closure of schools, caused by the COVID-19 virus, many parents and educators are wondering how to promote the maintenance of literacy skills during this extended leave. Littératout offers you simple and fun activities, digital books, video clips and suggested activities to do with your child to keep them engaged and motivated in reading, writing and oral communication during this period.

Digital Album Hibernation: A Matter of Survival (with audio narration)

Did you know that bears don't hibernate? What about bats, do they migrate or do they hibernate? This album will allow you to learn more about the phenomenon of hibernation, by which animals place themselves in a state of regulated hypothermia, for several days or weeks, in order to conserve their energy during the winter. Following this reading, you will be able to take advantage of the avenues for reflection and questioning, offered on page 13, to discuss this adaptation used by many Canadian animals.

Treasure hunt reading game - download and print this game!

Targeted skills: Reading comprehension skills, listening and speaking strategies

Players first read books of their choice. Then, the players roll a dice to advance their pawns on the game board, answering orally questions relating to the texts read. The first player to reach the Arrival space wins the game! This allows readers to share their ideas and opinions on the texts read and improve their understanding, while practicing listening and speaking strategies.

Write a pirate biography download and print this activity!

Targeted skills: Vocabulary, writing and / or oral communication skills depending on the use

During this activity, the young authors invent a pirate character and then write his biography. Through this activity, children will be able to practice various writing skills. This activity can also be done orally.

Dungeons game (pirate theme) - download and print this game!

Targeted skills: Vocabulary, listening and speaking strategies

Word to guess on port side! Prohibited words on starboard! In this fun oral communication activity, students describe words to make their teammates guess, without using certain prohibited words. The object of the game is to guess as many words as possible within a predetermined time. This activity is inspired by the Taboo shopping game.

Prepare a play or play featuring pirates

Targeted skills: Vocabulary, listening and speaking skills, writing and reading skills, self-confidence

Dramatic play is a great opportunity to consolidate a host of skills! First of all, it will be a question of preparing the play or the skit, which will allow the children to put into practice their skills in writing, reading and oral communication. The young actors will then be able to present their play to relatives and friends and even film themselves to make a short film that they can share online!
